MADISON (WKOW) -- As Thanksgiving approaches it's important to have your plan in place to make sure everything goes smoothly in the kitchen.
GFS Marketplace recommends three tips: plan ahead and stick to your plan, buy pre-made items and keep it simple with a twist.
Dan Scher, GFS Marketplace food expert, joins Wake Up Wisconsin Weekend with some tips and recipes to help you out in the kitchen this year.
According to Scher, due to drought-related price increases, the cost of a turkey is up 6.9 percent.

Tip One: Plan ahead and stick to your plan.
Here's what to plan for each guest:
6-8 oz. turkey
4 oz. per each side – mashed potatoes, stuffing, sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, cranberries
4 oz. dessert
A great idea is to use the GFS Menu Wizard – you can figure out your menu, how much to serve and how much it will cost per person.
Tip Two: Buy Pre-made items
Save time and money by buying ready-made items like pies and other desserts.
If you're not a big baker, this is cheaper than buying all of the ingredients and making items from scratch.
Tip Three: Keep It Simple, with a twist!
Thanksgiving is all about tradition, but that's no reason you can't twist things up a bit. To do so, keep it simple and twist up some typical Thanksgiving fare like green bean and corn bake casseroles.
