MADISON (WKOW) -- State regulators have delayed implementing a new northeastern Wisconsin area code again.
In 2008, the Public Service Commission decided to give new phone numbers in the 920 area code a 274 prefix to make sure they had enough numbers in the region.
The 274 number was supposed to be implemented in 2011 but was held off. The commission says economic slowdown has curtailed number growth. The agency has also reduced new numbers it hands providers, extending the 920 area code's longevity to 2017.
