Finding deals online during Cyber Monday

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW) -- These days, savvy shoppers don't need a special day like Cyber Monday to buy online. In fact, online sales have been strong all weekend and many retailers offered discounts before Monday.

Still, analysts say shoppers will spend a billion and a half dollars online Monday, up 20 percent from last year's Cyber Monday. There's a locally-owned website that helps you save the most money; www.FatWallet.com is headquartered in Beloit.

FatWallet has a special page for Cyber Monday deals. Some of the discounts as of early Monday morning were for XBox, Dell, Kate Spade, Old Navy, Gap, Banana Republic, phones and computers.

Brent Shelton from FatWallet.com says one of the big keys to savings is being able to compare deals and not focus on one advertised price. He says doing a quick search in the main search bar of FatWaller is simple, but it works. Then go to the category page to quickly compare the best tech deals of the day.

Shelton says one of the biggest retail tactics is to feature the store-wide discounts where shoppers can go buy anything on their lists and get big savings, free shipping and cash back.

If you're using other websites, here are some tips to make sure your purchase is secure:

1) Look for an "s" after http in the url (https://)

2) Pay with a credit card. It will offer more protections than debit cards.

3) Check statements regularly to make sure the only charges are the ones you've made.

4) Keep a record of order confirmations and receipts with a designated folder in your inbox or with an app like "Slice."

5) Don't use public wi-fi, only secure connections.

6) Lock devices with a password so data is protected even when your phone is out of your hands.

7) Work within apps from trusted sources.
