Firefighter to be nominated as hero

MADISON (WKOW) -- A Madison police official says an off-duty firefighter who interrupted an attack on a UW-Madison student will be nominated for a community heroism award.

Madison Police spokesperson Joel DeSpain says the 26-year old, off duty Madison firefighter came into the 100-block of East Johnson Street early Saturday morning, after a man had tackled a woman near a dental clinic.

DeSpain says the attacker punched the 21-year old woman, ignored her screams and willingness to give him her money, and was dragging her into nearby bushes.

DeSpain says the firefighter confronted the man, punched him, and the attacker ran off.

DeSpain tells 27 News it appears the attacker was trying to escalate the violence into a sexual assault, and the firefighter's actions interrupted greater harm to the woman.

DeSpain says the woman was briefly hospitalized. Authorities describe the attacker as a Caucasian man in his late twenties or early thirties, 5'11 and 200 lbs.
