President Obama to meet privately with Mitt Romney

WASHINGTON (WKOW) -- President Barack Obama will meet privately with Mitt Romney Thursday. It'll be their first face-to-face encounter since the election.

Obama had promised in his victory speech he would engage with Romney and consider some of the ideas he had talked about on the campaign trail. Obama and congressional Republicans are trying to negotiate a way out of automatic tax increases and deep spending cuts that are set to take effect at the beginning of the year.

Obama and Romney differed sharply during the campaign on how revive the economy. Obama called for higher taxes on the rich. Romney called for lower taxes on all.

The White House says the two men will meet in the White House's private dining room. There will be no press coverage.
