Madison high school athletes will be able to swap gym class credits

MADISON (WKOW) -- Madison high school athletes will no longer be required to take a half credit of physical education.

Under a newly adopted policy by the Madison School Board, athletes will instead be able to take a half credit of English, math, science or social studies.

The state legislature passed a law last December allowing school boards to decide whether or not to allow athletes to opt out of the half credit of physical education.
 
The Madison School Board unanimously adopted the new policy on Monday. 
 
According to The Monroe Times, the Monroe School Board approved a similar policy on Monday too. 
 
Joe Gothard, Madison assistant superintendent for secondary schools who worked on the proposal over the past several months, joins us on 27 News at 5 on Thursday to discuss why the Madison School Board decided to adopt this policy.
