DARLINGTON (WKOW) -- The court has entered not guilty pleas for Armin Wand III, the Argyle man accused of trying to kill his wife and kids by setting their home on fire, on all counts. His brother, Jeremy Wand, pleaded not guilty to all counts during their arraignment Wednesday afternoon.
For Armin Wand III, the defense stood mute on the four counts of intentional homicide, three counts of attempted homicide and one count arson he faces. The court in turn entered not guilty pleas on his behalf.
Jeremy Wand pleaded not guilty on the seven counts he faces. The court granted that the brothers will have separate trials.
Armin Wand III's attorney Guy Taylor requested a speedy trial for his client. "It's a tactical decision that the defense has arrived at, it's a right that we have under the statute," Taylor said about the decision. Armin Wand III's trial start date has been set for February 25, 2013 and will last one week.
Judge Thomas Vale said he's still considering the Wands' motion for a change of venue. That could mean the trial will be held outside of Lafayette County or a jury from outside the county will be brought in. In court Wednesday, Taylor argued an unbiased jury could not be selected within Lafayette County.
DARLINGTON (WKOW) -- Two brothers accused in a deadly house fire will be arraigned on multiple charges Wednesday.
Armin Wand III, 33, and his brother Jeremy Wand, 18, are charged with four counts of First Degree Intentional Homicide, Attempted Homicide and Arson. Prosecutors say Armin planned to kill his family to collect insurance money because he was tired of their financial problems. Police say he got his brother to help set a fire at his home in Argyle.
The fire killed Wand's three sons, Allen, Jeffrey and Joseph. His wife Sharon, who was four months pregnant at the time, was severely injured and she lost her baby. Their 2-year-old daughter Jessica survived, but police say Armin tried to put her back in the burning house. He's charged with an additional count of Attempted Homicide for that.
Armin and Jeremy Wand's arraignments are scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
27 News' Danielle Lama will have more on their court appearance tonight at 5 and 6.
