MADISON (WKOW) -- UW Director of Athletics Barry Alvarez confirmed Thursday morning that he will coach the Badgers in the Rose Bowl on January 1 vs. Stanford.
During a news conference Thursday, Alvarez said the players approached and asked him to coach the Rose Bowl, after former coach Bret Bielema accepted the job at the University of Arkansas. Alvarez received a text message from senior quarterback Curt Phillips and a call from senior linebacker Mike Taylor.
"I told him I would be honored to coach them, and I wanted them to understand, if I were going to coach, we weren't going to screw around," Alvarez said. "We were going to go out there to win."
Alvarez is taking the head coaching reins, because he felt it would allow the assistant coaches to focus solely on their own responsibilities as assistants.
Alvarez wanted to make it clear, he will coach this one game alone. As far as a long term replacement for the Badgers, Alvarez said he has a short list of candidates and would start interviewing next week.
He did eliminate former UW offensive coordinator Paul Chryst as a possibility. Alvarez said he helped Chryst get his current job as head coach at Pittsburgh, and that it wouldn't be right for him to leave after one season.
MADISON (WKOW) -- It appears UW Director of Athletics Barry Alvarez will step back onto the football field and lead the Badgers in the Rose Bowl.
The Wisconsin State Journal cites a source close to Alvarez, who said the team's captains reached out to Alvarez and asked him to coach the team. Alvarez told them he would be "honored" to do so.
At his introductory news conference in Arkansas, former head coach Bret Bielema said he had also heard Alvarez would be coaching the team.
"They might finally win one, " Bielema said. "Everybody tells me he won three and I lost two, so they will have a tremendous opportunity in the bowl game."
We'll know for sure Thursday morning when Alvarez holds a news conference at 10 a.m.
