Wisconsin ranks 16th in overall health this year

MADISON (WKOW) -- America's latest health rankings show Wisconsin ranks 16th in overall health in 2012. That's down four spots from where we were last year.

According to United Health Foundation's 2012 America's Health Rankings, Wisconsin is near the top in overall health compared to other states. We have our strengths and challenges, the report shows.

The good news is Wisconsin is Number 1 in high school graduation, with nearly 91 percent of students graduating. We have the 6th lowest rate of uninsured population and have the 11th lowest prevalence of diabetes.

But the report also shows Wisconsin has the Number 1 obesity rate among African American adults at 49.4 percent. We also have the Number 1 binge drinking rate and are Number 50 in per capita public health funding. Wisconsin also has the largest increase in the number of children living in poverty, from 12.7 percent in 2011 to 21.4 percent in 2012.

Vermont is listed as the healthiest state, followed by Hawaii.  Louisiana and Mississippi tied for last.

The report also shows Americans overall are living longer because of medical advances, but unhealthy behavior and preventable illness are still threatening our quality of life. While premature, cardiovascular and cancer deaths have gone down since 1990, Americans are still dealing with obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and sedentary behavior.
