MADISON (WKOW) -- The approaching storm is causing some scheduling problems for college students. Officials have decided to close Madison College's campus on Thursday, which means the winter commencement ceremony scheduled for the evening will have to be canceled.
The college is concerned about students and relatives that would be driving in dangerous conditions.
Final exams during the day will also need to be rescheduled to finish the semester.
"Some of the students will do their exams via the Internet on Blackboard, some will be rescheduled other days," says Bettsey Barhorst, president of Madison College. "They're making all kinds of arrangements and we're ready to be open Friday, Saturday, Sunday.. however long we need to be for students to get their exams in."
Diplomas will be mailed out to about 300 graduating students, and any who want to walk in a ceremony will still be able to do so-- they'll just have to wait until May commencement.
The cancellation is particularly disappointing for one student-- Kirsty Lowry. She was to give the graduate address Thursday night, telling her life story and motivating students for the next big step after college.
Lowry moved from Australia where she was a teacher to go back to school in Madison. She plans to start her own business as a wellness coach.
Thursday night would have been an exciting day for her whole family.
"My parents are in New Zealand at the moment and they were excited, you know, being with family and they were going to watch the live streaming of it, but its just one of those things no one can do anything about it and it's better that people stay safe," says Lowry.
Lowry will still present her speech-- it'll be recorded and posted online on the Madison College website.
The UW-Madison campus will also be affected-- open for essential functions only. No in person exams will be held. They'll either be rescheduled or dropped from students' grades.
