Two killed in crash with semi because of slick roads

ROCK COUNTY (WKOW) -- Two people are killed in a crash in Rock County involving a car and a semi.

Around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, Rock County Sheriff's deputies responded to the accident on West State Highway 11 about a half mile west of North Roherty Road in Center Township.

Investigators say a 2002 Volkswagen Beetle driver by Jaime Paiz-Gutierrez, 41, of Footville, was going west on Highway 11 when he lost control on the snow and ice covered roadway. Police say he crossed the center line into the path of a 2011 Peterbuilt semi tractor/trailer, driven by Jeffrey B. Smith, 46, of Rockford.

Paiz-Gutierrez and his passenger, Guadalupe Ortiz, 45, of Footville were wearing their seatbelts and became trapped in the vehicle. Both were pronounced dead at the scene by the Rock County Chief Deputy Coroner.

Smith was taken to Mercy Hospital in Janesville where he was treated for minor injuries and released.

The crash is under investigation, but the sheriff's office say the road conditions were poor at the time of the crash.

State Highway 11 was closed between West County Trunk Highway B and North Roherty Road for nearly five hours.
