South African gold coin placed in Salvation Army red kettle

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW) -- The Salvation Army of Dane county received an exciting donation Monday.

A South African solid gold coin, known as a Krugerrand, was dropped into one of their red kettles.

A long time volunteer was ringing the bell at West Towne Mall when he was approached by the donor, asking if the Salvation Army had received any gold coins this year.  The volunteer said he hadn't heard of any.  The anonymous donor then put the one ounce gold coin into the kettle.

That coin is worth about $1,700.  It is especially beneficial as the Red Kettle Campaign is not on track to raise as much this year as it has in the past.

Major Loren Carter, Dane County Coordinator states, "Our fundraising is down at kettles this year.  We have very little time to make it to our goal, but we are hopeful to get there with the community's support."
