$10M to UW for smoking study

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW) -- $10 million is coming to the University of Wisconsin to help discover the best ways for Wisconsin residents to quit smoking.

With the federal grant money, researchers will recruit 600-800 smokers.

They will get free counseling on how to quit, potentially life-saving tests and free medications.

In the end, researchers hope to have a better idea of how to treat smoking, and reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke and cancer.

They also say it will create jobs in Milwaukee and Madison.
