President signs 'fiscal cliff' bill with autopen

HONOLULU, Hawaii (WKOW) -- President Barack Obama has signed the "fiscal cliff" legislation into law with an autopen. He is still in Hawaii, vacationing with his family.

The bill arrived at the White House Wednesday afternoon and was immediately processed. A copy was delivered to the president for review. He then directed the bill to be signed by autopen back in Washington.

The Bush administration deemed in 2005 that using an autopen is constitutional. Obama has used the autopen twice in the past to sign legislation, both times while he was overseas.

The bill boosts taxes on the wealthiest Americans, while keeping tax cuts for Americans making less than $400,000 a year. It also extends unemployment benefits and puts off spending cuts, but only until March.
