80 WI teachers earn national certification - WKOW 27: Madison, WI Breaking News, Weather and Sports

MADISON (WKOW) -- Dozens of Wisconsin educators have earned professional certification through the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards this year.

State Superintendent Tony Evers says for those 80 educators teaching in Wisconsin schools, this is considered the highest national credential available. That makes 876 total educators in Wisconsin who hold the national certification.

The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction says the assessments include four portfolio entries that feature teaching practice and six constructed response exercises that assess content knowledge. The assessments are then reviewed by trained educators in each certificate area to evaluate each teacher.

The national certification usually takes between one and three years to complete.

"Research shows that when educators go through the required steps to earn national board certification, there is a positive impact on student achievement," says Evers. "Educator effectiveness is critical to helping our students succeed, and national board certification is one means to ensure the quality of the teacher in the classroom."
