MADISON (WKOW) -- A local non profit is looking for the community's help to continue providing for children with special needs.
Kindred Kids, based in Columbus, provides a lending library of toys, books, and equipment; such as wheelchairs, walkers, and communication devices to children with differing abilities.
Wendy Simyab, one of WKOW's Jefferson Award Winners in 2011, began Kindred Kids after learning first hand what families go through everyday having a child with special needs. Simyab has five children, her youngest has cerebral palsy.
Kindred Kids not only provides toys, games, and reading materials for kids with special needs for free, it also provides a place where kids can be kids.
The non profit's website say the name "Kindred Kids" was chosen "because there are commonalities shared by all kids, but their needs as children are the same."
The non profit is seeking donations of toys and materials to be used in the lending library, as well as, to be sold to the general public to earn some funding for the organization. The proceeds from donated toys are used to purchase equipment to provide for the special needs of the kids.
In addition to the lending library, the non profit serves as a community resource, for not only the kids, but also for the parents. Kindred Kids hosts play groups, support groups, informational groups and advocacy groups.
For more information, or to donate, check out Kindred Kids' website.
Simyab joins us on 27 News at 5 on Wednesday to talk about Kindred Kids and needs of the non profit.
