CHICAGO (WKOW) -- A shipment of 18 human heads has been held up at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport. The heads were sent from Rome and bound for a U.S. facility where they would be used in anatomical research.
The heads were properly preserved, wrapped and tagged as human specimens, according to a spokeswoman for the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. There's no suggestion of foul play.
The containers are being stored at the Cook County morgue until authorities decide what to do with the shipment. Officials say the heads were frozen in sealed containers and sent from a legitimate facility in Rome about a week before Christmas.
It's not immediately clear why customs officials held up the shipment.
