ELKHORN (WKOW) -- An inmate under guard at an Elkhorn hospital was fatally shot during an escape attempt.
Authorities say 18-year-old Alfredo Villarreal, of Janesville, was at Lakeland Medical center undergoing tests for an unidentified medical issue, when he attacked the deputy Monday night.
Officials say Villarreal punched and kicked the deputy multiple times in the face. The deputy used a stun gun on the inmate, but that failed to stop him.
The sheriff's department says the inmate then tried to break a window in his room. When that didn't work, he took a chair and struck the deputy over the head. That deputy then shot and killed Villarreal.
The Walworth County Sheriff's Department has turned the investigation over to Waukesha County.
