Off-duty officer nabs shoplifter

MADISON (WKOW) -- An off-duty Madison Police lieutenant takes a shoplifting suspect to the ground, holding him down until uniformed officers arrived.

It happened Saturday afternoon at the Walmart on Nakoosa Trail.

The lieutenant was shopping with his daughter when he saw 23-year-old Brandon Kinsey, of Madison, try to push past a loss prevention officer.

Kinsey had just stolen ammunition for a BB gun and an airsoft gun.  The lieutenant did identify himself as an officer, but it did not stop Kinsey from trying to escape.

After a brief struggle, the men landed on the floor of the store's vestibule.  On the way down, however, the lieutenant cracked his nose on a vending machine.

When uniformed officers arrived, they found him bleeding while pinning the suspect to the floor.

Brandon Kinsey was arrested for disorderly conduct and retail theft.
