MADISON (WKOW) -- Wisconsin Physicians Service Insurance Corporation (WPS) notified the state Department of Workforce Development that it plans to lay off 451 workers, including 250 in the Madison area.
WPS says the cuts will come from its offices on E. Olin Avenue in Madison and on the 1700 block of W. Broadway in Monona (those buildings have a Madison mailing address).
Another 201 employees will be laid off from its office in Wausau.
The company says the layoffs are set to begin March 29, 2013.
WPS says the cuts are due to competition and losses in the federal government contracts market.
The Department of Workforce Development says it will work with the affected employees to help them find other jobs.
WPS is a not-for profit corporation that offers commercial health insurance products.
