Giffords to be surprise witness on curbing gun violence

Posted:

WASHINGTON (WKOW) -- Curbing gun violence in our nation continues to be a hot topic for discussion. On Wednesday, former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was wounded in a mass shooting, is expected to be a surprise witness at the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on curbing gun violence.

The former Arizona Democrat suffered a severe head wound back in a 2011 when she was shot while meeting with constituents outside a Tucson supermarket. A Senate aide says, Giffords is not expected to answer questions at the session. The aide spoke on condition of anonymity because Giffords' appearance had not been announced.

Giffords' husband, retired astronaut Mark Kelly, had already been scheduled to appear before the panel. The two have formed a political action group called Americans for Responsible Solutions, aimed at promoting gun restrictions.

The executive vice president of the National Rifle Association or NRA, Wayne LaPierre is set to testify at the hearing on Wednesday.
