TOWN OF WESTPORT (WKOW) -- Authorities are concerned about repeated break-ins in a Dane County neighborhood.
Dane County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Elise Schaffer says the office began taking calls about this ongoing issue back in September, when nearly a dozen incidents happened in just a few days. The most recent happened Wednesday overnight.
Homes in the town of Westport have been targeted along the north side of Lake Mendota. Most of the incidents happened on Blue Bill Park Drive, Westport Road and Lighthouse Bay Drive.
Officials say for the most part it's been crimes of opportunity happening overnight. Suspects have gotten into unlocked cars and unsecured garage doors, but in a few cases these thieves have caused some damage when forcing their way into garages and windows.
The suspects have stolen things like electronics, loose change and cash.
"For the people that are victims in these cases, it's really become a problem with it happening for such a long period of time," says Shaffer. "We've had people that have been victimized more than once."
The Sheriff's Office encourages people to lock up their cars and garages at all times and keep valuables out of sight. Authorities ask everyone in the area to look out for their neighbors and report any suspicious behavior immediately.
