SPARTA (WKOW) -- One person was killed Friday morning after a head-on crash in Monroe County.
It happened around 9:15 a.m. on State Highway 16 in the township of Adrian, between Sparta and Tomah.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Department says a vehicle was trying to pass another vehicle in the westbound lane when the driver noticed oncoming traffic. Deputies say the driver tried to get back into the other lane but lost control due to ice and snow and hit an oncoming car head-on.
The passenger in the westbound car, a 49-year-old woman from Tomah, was pronounced dead at the scene. Deputies say a child in that car was taken to the hospital in critical condition. The driver and another passenger were taken to a hospital with injuries.
Authorities say the driver of the other vehicle had to be pulled from the vehicle and was airlifted to Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in serious condition.
The names of the people involved in the crash are not being released.

Emergency crews are on the scene. The Wisconsin State Patrol says officials are performing CPR on the child, who they say has serious injuries. Crews are extricating others from the vehicles.
The State Patrol say the Med Link helicopter also transported one person from the scene.
The State Patrol said, as of 10 a.m., Highway 16 in both directions is closed for at least the next few hours.
