GLEN ROSE, TX (WKOW) – A Texas sheriff confirms that author and former Navy SEAL Chris Kyle has been fatally shot along with his friend on a gun range.
According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and Stephenville Empire-Tribune, Erath County Sheriff Tommy Bryant says 38-year-old Chris Kyle and 35-year-old Chad Littlefield were found dead Saturday afternoon at Rough Creek Lodge's shooting range west of Glen Rose. Kyle is the author of the best-selling book, "American Sniper."
According to the Star-Telegram, witnesses told sheriff's investigators a gunman opened fire on the men and then fled in a pickup truck belonging to one of the victims.
The U.S. military identified the man charged with murdering both men as 25-year-old Eddie Ray Routh. Routh was in the Marines from June 2006 to January 2010. He was deployed to Iraq in 2007.
Police say that after the shootings, Routh drove to his sister's home in Midlothian and told his sister and brother-in-law what he had done. After he left, his relatives called the police. Authorities say a semi-automatic handgun used in the fatal shooting was found at the suspect's home.
Sgt. Lonny Haschel with Texas Department of Public Safety said Routh is charged with two counts of capital murder. Routh is being held on a $3 million bond at Erath County Jail.
