MADISON (WKOW) -- The Madison Board of Education says Dr. Walter Milton, Jr. has withdrawn as a candidate to be the district's next superintendent.
Here is the full statement from the Board:
"After thought and discussion with his family, Dr. Milton has informed us that he believes our school district is not the right fit for him, and he will pursue another opportunity. Therefore, he has withdrawn his application. We appreciate the opportunity to talk with Dr. Milton about his vision for enhanced student achievement, and we wish him the best.
We do have a very qualified candidate who we are excited to bring before the community and continue our decision process.
Dr. Cheatham is a top candidate, and we are impressed by her work. In her time there, Chicago Public Schools have made significant strides in improving student achievement, and the schools that Dr. Cheatham specifically supervised made gains above the district average. Dr. Cheatham brings a depth of experience addressing the challenges of an urban school district and making improvements in the face of high need and dwindling resources. Those are the skills and expertise that we are looking for as we continue our path to improving achievement for all students.
We will continue the decision making process on Thursday with final meetings with Dr. Cheatham. We are eager for the community to attend the community forum, bring their questions and join us as we continue this important process."
The community forum to which the board is referring is Thursday, February 7 at 5:45 p.m. at Monona Terrace. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from Dr. Cheatham and ask questions. Anyone unable to attend can submit comments to firstname.lastname@example.org.
