Rock County shooting suspect arrested

PLYMOUTH TOWNSHIP (WKOW) -- The Rock County Sheriff's Office says the suspect in a fatal shooting last week was arrested Monday on a charge of first degree intentional homicide.

The Rock County Sheriff's Office says the investigation into 59-year-old Christine M. Gestrich's death, led them to arrest 75-year-old Daniel Bellard, who remains in stable condition at UW Hospital in Madison. Police are keeping him under guard.

Police say Bellard is the only suspect in the homicide. Officials say the investigation is based on physical evidence gathered at the scene, witness statements and investigative interviews.

Officials say Bellard and Gestrich are neighbors and live on West Stuart Road in Plymouth.

The Rock County Sheriff's Office says when deputies arrived at the home on the 6700 block of West Stuart Road on Wednesday, February 6, they encountered thick fog and limited visibility. Officials say Bellard's wife made the call to 911.

"We also found out from the wife that the subject was still armed and somewhere else on the property," Sheriff Robert Spoden said.

After searching the area, authorities found Gestrich dead inside a barn on Bellard's property. Bellard was located shortly after in another outbuilding with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gun shot wound.

The Sheriff's Office is looking into reports that Gestrich may have been removing snow from Bellard's property just before the shooting. Spoden says authorities have never been called to either home and neither the suspect nor victim have criminal records.
