MADISON (WKOW) -- Madison Spokesman Joel DeSpain says the mother of the toddler struck and killed by a car on East Washington Avenue Thursday morning has been taken into custody on a probation hold that's unrelated to the death of her one-and-a-half-year-old daughter.
The mother has been identified as 31-year-old Raya M. Hansen.
DeSpain says Hansen had been staying at the Motel 6 on Thierer Road near East Washington and has no permanent address.
MADISON (WKOW) -- Madison Police have released more details in the death of a toddler hit by a car on East Washington Avenue just after 3:30 Thursday morning.
The little girl was one-and-a-half years old.
Police say the girl's 31-year old mother told investigators she was walking on the north side of East Washington and using a wheelchair as a stroller to push the child. She said they were walking to a Walgreens near the site of the crash. "She said that she needed to get or wanted to get a soda and some other items," Madison Police Spokesman Joel DeSpain said.
The mother told police she was in the 3700 block when she left the wheelchair unattended for a short period of time because she thought she had dropped a baby bottle, and she wanted to retrace her steps and try to find it.
She said she heard the crash, and that it appeared the wheelchair rolled down a driveway and into the street.
Police say the driver of a van, a 53-year old McFarland man, claimed he did not see the wheelchair but heard a noise and realized he must have hit something. Police say he stopped immediately and their initial investigation shows no sign of impairment. "Obviously, both mother and the driver are very distraught," DeSpain said.
Madison Police Spokesman Joel DeSpain told 27 News reporter Danielle Lama the woman has no permanent address and that she says she has been staying at a Motel 6 just off East Washington on Thierer Road.
Police are investigating and ask anyone who saw the crash, or who might have information on the case, to call the police department's Traffic Unit at 266-4060.
