MADISON (WKOW) -- A Dane County court commissioner set bail as a signature bond for a Mount Horeb police lieutenant accused of repeatedly, sexually assaulting a teenage boy.

A Dane County prosecutor stated Friday 44-year old Dennis Jenks assaulted a 14-year old over a period of six months, beginning in September of last year. The prosecutor said formal charges are expected to be filed against Jenks Monday. Jenks is scheduled to appear in court on charges Thursday.

Jenks appeared in court Friday in a suicide prevention smock, and the prosecutor said Jenks has threatened to harm himself. Jenks was represented at the bail hearing by an assistant state public defender, even though the attorney stated Jenks was ineligible for publicly-funded representation, because his assets were too high.

Jenks is a lieutenant with the Mount Horeb Police department, has been with the force for more than a dozen years, and served previously with other police departments.

In 1999, Jenks was fined $300 for furnishing a teenager with alcohol. A police reports states  Jenks invited the teen to Jenks' home, where the boy drank beer.

"Jenks told (the boy) he had to drink or he, Jenks, was not taking him hone," the report states.

Jenks was disciplined by the Blue Mounds Police department as a result of the incident.

Mount Horeb Police Chief Jeff Veloff told 27 News a previous chief hired Jenks, but said he promoted Jenks to lieutenant, with knowlegde of the past citation involving the boy. Veloff said Jenks' police work has been excellent.

Jenks has been suspended from his police job without pay.

Those lieutenant duties were suspended immediately following his arrest. Madison police arrested Jenks at his home in the 6600 block of Raymond Road in Madison around 9:00 p.m. Wednesday.

Being that the incident happened in the city of Madison, the Madison Police Department is handling the criminal investigation. The Mount Horeb police chief says they will be doing their own internal investigation as well into Jenks' conduct as an officer.
