Senator's bill would require state Supreme Court to take certain cases

MADISON (WKOW) -- The president of the state Senate is trying to gather support for a bill that would require the Wisconsin Supreme Court to take any lawsuit directly challenging the constitutionality of state statutes and decide the matter within 150 days.

Senator Michael Ellis, a Republican from Neenah, sent an email to all legislators on Thursday asking for co-sponsors for the bill.

Multiple parties filed lawsuits challenging Republican Governor Scott Walker's law stripping most public workers of nearly all their union rights, as well as a Republican-authored law requiring voters to show photo identification at the polls.

Ellis writes in his email that his bill would streamline the process.

A conservative majority of four justices currently controls the seven-justice Wisconsin Supreme Court.
