BMW recalls nearly 570,000 cars to fix cables

DETROIT (WKOW) – BMW is recalling about 570,000 cars in the U.S. and Canada due to a battery cable connector that can fail and cause engines to stall.

Officials said the recall affects 3-Series sedans, wagons, convertibles and coupes from the 2007 through 2011 model years.  It also includes a 1-Series coupes and convertibles from 2008 through 2012, and the Z4 sports car from 2009 through 2011.

Federal safety regulators said the connector and a fuse box terminal can degrade over time and cause a break in the electrical connection.  An electrical connection break can cause the cars to lose electrical power and stall unexpectedly.

BMW said it knows of one minor collision in Canada due to the problem, but no injuries.

The German automaker will replace the battery cable connector and secure it for free. The recall will start next month.
