Madison man who took 75 chopsticks from restaurant cited for trespassing

MADISON (WKOW) -- A Madison man was cited for trespassing after taking approximately 75 chopsticks from a Chinese restaurant and then using them at a McDonalds restaurant.

Madison Police say a 60-year-old man was found with the excessive amount of eating utensils inside the Park Street McDonalds on the evening of February 5.

While officers were searching the man, they found the chopsticks in his right pant leg. He told them he had gotten them from across the street, at the Hong Kong Café, where he had just been.

Officials say the man was slurring his speech when he told them he didn't know why police were contacting him. They told him the owner of Hong Kong Café wanted him arrested for trespassing.

According to police, the restaurant's owner had asked the suspect numerous times to leave because he was just hanging out and not eating. The owner told police the suspect eventually responded by sitting down on the floor in the middle of the restaurant and stayed there for quite a while. The owner quoted the suspect as saying, "Why are you hating on me?"

The suspect left after police were called and went to the McDonalds across the street.

Hong Kong Café wants him banned from ever coming in again; however, police say the owner was seemingly unaware the suspect took the chopsticks when police were called.

The 60-year-old was cited and released for unlawful trespass.
