UPDATE: Fire extinguished at UW Medical Science Building

MADISON (WKOW) -- The Madison Fire Department continues their investigation into what caused Thursday morning's fire at the Medical Sciences Center on UW Campus.

Fire officials first said that sprinklers were activated in the room where the fire occurred. They have since said a failure of water lines above the ceiling is what actually sprayed water into the room. "The fire was knocked down pretty quickly once we located it," Madison Fire Dept. Spokeswoman Lori Wirth said.

UW Campus police say parts of the building have been opened but there is "extensive" damage throughout the building. Sgt. Aaron Chapin says most of the building will be open Friday but some classes have been canceled.

An estimate on the cost of damage will not be available for a few days, according to Chapin.

MADISON (WKOW) -- Lori Wirth with the Madison Fire Department says firefighters have extinguished the fire at the UW Medical Science Building.

Crews were called to 1300 University Avenue around 8:20 Thursday morning.  Employees at UW-Police saw flames from the roof and contacted the fire department.

Wirth says there was initial confusion when they arrived as the fire panel showed multiple floors were affected.  The building was evacuated and people were turned away as they arrived for classes or work.

The building does have sprinklers, which deployed.  Once the fire was located, on the fourth floor in the rear of the building, crews were able to extinguish it fairly quickly. Fire officials say damage was confined to the 4th floor but smoke damage spread to multiple floors.

A third alarm was called as the building is extremely large and Madison Fire wanted to make sure they had ample resources.

Investigators are on scene to determine the cause of the fire. The fire was extinguished by 9:00 a.m.

MADISON (WKOW) -- According to a tweet from UW-Madison Police Department, drivers should use alternate routes as Henry Mall, Linden Drive and northbound Charter Street are all closed.

Fire and police are on scene of a working fire at the Medical Science Building at 1300 University Avenue.

The 3-alarm fire was called in shortly before 8:30 Thursday morning.
