Former campaign volunteer in court on obstruction charge

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW) -- A former campaign volunteer for Republican congressional candidate Chad Lee appeared in court Thursday on a charge, he obstructed an officer with a false report of being beaten.

A court commissioner entered a not guilty plea for 30-year-old Kyle Wood of Madison. Wood's bail was set as a $500 signature bond on his misdemeanor charge.

Authorities say Wood injured himself last year and told police he was attacked by an intruder. At the time, Wood told a conservative blogger he appeared to be targeted because he was a gay man helping the Republican opponent of openly gay Democrat, Congressman Mark Pocan.

Authorities say Wood later conceded he made up the beating story, and used a guitar string to cause some of his injuries.
