MADISON (WKOW)-- The Occupy Madison group is moving into an open field near some local homes. People who live in those homes have mixed feelings about it.
For weeks the group had been living in tents at Token Creek Park, but the county only allowed them to stay until March 17th. Several members started moving Saturday night to the 3600 block of Portage Road in East Madison.
Property records show a man named Koua Vang bought the land for $20,000 last year. Occupy members say he's allowing them to camp there rent-free and has offered to pay any fines they might receive from the city.
Neighbors were notified two weeks ago when the group went door to door handing out fliers.
"I think we're all trying to keep an open mind about it and everything," nearby resident Veronica Zabo says. "I know some people aren't very thrilled, having younger kids running around and such, but we've kind of talked to the kids about what they are not allowed and what they are allowed to do."
Other neighbors are up in arms. Several say they plan to complain to city officials.
Madison Police say they've received numerous calls already. Officers say they're keeping an eye on the area, but at this time they're not aware of the group breaking any laws.
A few neighbors, however, say the land is deemed only fit for agricultural purposes, and camping or living there is against the law.
