Pope prepares for big day

ROME (WKOW) -- Tens of thousands of people are packing into Rome for Tuesday's official installation of Pope Francis.

Monday, the pontiff met with his former adversary, Argentine president Christina Kirchner, the head of his native country.

As a cardinal, he had been an outspoken critic of hers because of her support for policies like gay marriage and free contraception.

The two met as controversy about Pope Francis' past grabbed headlines around the world.

Human right activists say in the 70's, he turned a blind eye to atrocities committed by Argentina' military dictatorship, including the taking of children after their mothers were murdered.

"There were church leaders who were very close and way too close to the military regime. Bergoglio was not one of these - that he in fact kept a low profile but did not work with the military," said John Thavis, author of "Vatican Diaries".

The Vatican rejects the allegations against the Pope, calling them slander.

Tuesday, Francis will be officially installed as the 267th pope of the Roman Catholic church.

He's the first non-European pope in 1,300.
