MAZOMANIE (WKOW) -- The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is limiting access to Mazomanie Beach in an effort to curb illicit sex in public.
As of this week, the entire property, including the beach, islands off the beach and wooded areas will be closed Monday through Friday until September 15th. The beach will be open for public recreation on Saturdays and Sundays from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. throughout the year.
DNR officials say they're hoping to make Mazomanie Beach along the lower Wisconsin River a more safe and enjoyable environment for the public.
"It is clear from our records that the majority of illicit activity is taking place on weekdays. Along with the closure we will add extra law enforcement presence," says DNR Conservation Warden Nate Kroeplin.
The closure is an expansion of existing limitations of the wooded areas surrounding the beach put in place over the past few seasons in an attempt to curb sexual activity, drug use, cruising for sex and other complaints.
