SUN PRAIRIE (WKOW) -- Just before 9:00 a.m. Wednesday, the Sun Prairie police and fire departments, along with Madison Emergency Medical Services, responded to Sun Prairie High School for a call of an unresponsive 13-year-old boy.

Police say the boy is a 7th grader at Patrick Marsh Middle School.

The school district says 7th grade students were in their second day of swimming at the high school for a physical education class, and the high school pool manager, a certified lifeguard, rescued the boy from the bottom of the pool.

When school staff removed the boy from the pool, police say he was breathing but not responsive. School officials contacted emergency services and continued to monitor the situation.

The boy was taken to St. Mary's Sun Prairie Emergency Department and then to UW Hospital, where he has been admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.  Police say he is listed in critical but stable condition.

Sun Prairie Police say they will continue to gather information, but that there are no indications right now of criminal activity.
