School board candidates hold issue forum

MADISON (WKOW)-- Several of the candidates for Madison school board spoke Thursday afternoon about the issues the district faces. The event was held at Fresh Start, a program that helps students find alternative learning and employment.

Most of the questions focused on money for alternative learning programs and closing the district's achievement gap. Students asked each candidate several questions.

Seat five candidate TJ Mertz said funding will most likely be the biggest issue moving forward.

"The state budget means about a 15% cut in state funding to Madison schools at a minimum. That's one place where your advocacy, your voice, the voices of students and young people in programs like this can be very important," Mertz says to students at Operation Fresh Start.

Mertz is running unopposed after Sarah Manski dropped out of the race. Current school board President James Howard and candidates Dean Loumos and Wayne Strong also attended the forum.

The school board election is Tuesday April 2nd.
