Woman in town for husband's surgery gets robbed

MADISON (WKOW) -- Police say a 63-year-old Oklahoma woman was targeted by thieves as she shopped at the Goodwill on Verona Rd. shortly after arriving in Madison.

Debbie Egleston and her husband Roger were flown to Madison because he needs an organ transplant at UW Hospital hospital. "We have to stay close and we have to be ready," Roger says about their stay.

Because they had to leave Oklahoma in a rush, the couple wasn't able to pack personal items. Each was allowed one suitcase on Medflight. "There's no way you can come up here and live on that," Debbie says.

On March 2, she was picking up a few things at the Goodwill. Police say while shopping, the suspect(s) took her wallet from the cart she was using.

After Debbie realized it was missing she received a call from her credit card company. She was told questionable transactions were attempted at the Target Store in Fitchburg. Debbie says that transaction was denied, but the suspect(s) were still able to steal $3,000 from a different card in her wallet.

A second victim within the Goodwill store was also identified. Police say in total, the victims' cards were used to buy more than $6,000 in gift cards and other merchandise. "Veterans don't like to be lied to and veterans don't like thieves," Roger, a Vietnam veterans says. The couple now wants to do everything possible to bring the suspects to justice.

"Were really asking people if they were in or around that Target store and if they can identify those subjects," Madison Police Spokesman Howard Payne says about released security photos.

Police are asking for the public to assist in identifying the suspects. Any information leading to an arrest could result in a cash reward, and callers can remain anonymous by contacting Crime Stoppers at (608) 266- 6014.
