Report shows Marathon Co. Jail dangerously understaffed

Posted:

WAUSAU (WKOW) -- Staffing at the Marathon County jail is even lower that six years ago, when a consultants' report said that the jail was so understaffed employees could be in danger.

Wednesday, an inmate attack left a 36-year-old female guard hospitalized in critical condition. The Marathon County Administrator Brad Karger told the Wausau Daily Herald he doesn't think staffing levels contributed to the attack.

The daughter of a corrections officer at the jail disagrees. Melissa Johnson, 27, of Amherst says she fears for her mother's life every time she goes to work because of understaffing.

The 2007 report says the staff-to-inmate ratio at the jail was too low to appropriately manage inmates.
