Bowling and brotherhood

MONONA (WKOW) -- Big Brother Howard Hansen says his Little Brother Ray is so easy to get along with that it's hard to tell who the mentor is.

"He's a very gentle soul. I don't think Ray would hurt a fly," Hansen said.

10-year-old Ray has taught Hansen to avoid "unnecessary drama," according to Hansen, who is a retired medic paratrooper.

"He doesn't make every issue his issue. He has a few main themes in his life, and the other stuff he just shrugs off," Hansen said.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Dane County paired Hansen and Ray together more than two years ago. Back then, Ray was more guarded, according to Hansen. Now, Ray is more open about his feelings.

"I was like, ‘Cool, I actually get a brother!' Because I'm always the only child and I have nothing to do," Ray said, remembering his and Hansen's first meeting.

Since the end of March, the pair have been practicing their bowling techniques for the upcoming Bowl For Kids' Sake event. It's one of the largest sources of revenue for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Dane County, and Hansen and Ray will be bowling and selling raffle tickets.

Hansen says he is happy to bowl over 100, but he has another weapon: Ray.

"Ray's not shy. He'll walk up to complete strangers and hustle them for raffle tickets. He's very charming. You can't say no to him," Hansen said.

"Do you want to buy some tickets," Ray said with a wide grin.

Off the lanes, Hansen and Ray like to play basketball and eat pizza.
