New auto safety guidelines

WASHINGTON (WKOW) -- Since so many people just can't turn off the technology when they get behind the wheel to drive, car makers may do it for them.

Tuesday, federal transportation officials released new safety guidelines, urging car companies to limit the distractions of electronic devices in vehicles.

TTat includes communications, entertainment and navigation tools.

The D-O-T says devices should be designed so drivers don't have to look away from the road for more than two-seconds at a time or 12 seconds total.

The voluntary guidelines also recommend disabling text messaging and video communications unless the vehicle is stopped.
