BARABOO (WKOW) -- Foremost Farms USA is consolidating its cheese operations, which means the closure of one plant in western Wisconsin and the idling of another.
The Baraboo-based company announced Friday it will permanently close its plant in Alma Center and its plant in Waumandee will be idled. The work from the two plants will be integrated into facilities in Appleton, Richland Center, Milan and Marshfield.
Foremost says it's making the move to capitalize on recent investments in its processing network.
The Alma Center closure will impact 52 workers. About 50 employees will be indefinitely laid off in Waumandee. Foremost says the impacted workers can apply for limited openings at other facilities.
"We recognize that this decision has a significant impact on the Alma Center and Waumandee employees and these local communities. Our employees are very dedicated and experienced, and we are working to ease the transition as much as possible by offering severance packages to the individuals who are permanently losing their jobs," said Foremost president Dave Fuhrmann.
