State overtime costs drop 22 percent

MADISON (WKOW) -- Gov. Scott Walker says overtime costs dropped 22 percent in state government last year, declining below the level they were before Walker took office in 2011.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Wednesday the state paid $49.9 million in overtime in 2012 compared with $63.1 million in 2011. In 2010, the state paid $52.7 million in overtime.

The steep drop last year was due to a decrease in premium overtime where workers are paid at one and a half times their hourly rate instead of just their regular hourly rate.

Wisconsin State Employees Union executive director Marty Beil says he doesn't think overtime hours have actually fallen, only the amount the state is paying workers.
