MADISON/VERONA (WKOW) -- The search for fugitive Paris Poe had some area schools on lockdown for a few hours Thursday.

Chavez and Leopold elementary schools were locked down along with all schools in the Verona district.

Parents were able to pick up their kids at Chavez at the end of the day. They say they appreciate all the extra security surrounding the school.

"We need to go home and talk to our children about safety and the December situation is still heavy on the mind so it's scary. It keeps the heart beating," said parent Cindy Wimmer, referring to the school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.

Madison school officials say they do always keep their doors locked. The lockdown is just an extra precaution.

At 4:30 p.m., all remaining middle and high school students will be allowed to board buses.

District officials say there will be increased police presence at all sites. They say there will be no late buses.

In Madison, Chavez and Leopold elementary schools were locked down. Luis Yudice of the Madison Metropolitan School District says the schools were reopened within two hours. The lockdown meant outdoor activities were cancelled.

Multiple agencies continue an active search for fugitive Paris Poe.

The ONLY students who will be allowed to leave are students whose parents come to pick them up. Parents / Guardians MUST produce a Photo ID and that MUST be verified by school staff.   NO OTHER STUDENTS ARE ALLOWED TO EXIT at this time.

There will be police presence at other area schools as students are dismissed for the day.

Again, authorities are searching for Paris Poe, one of the FBI's most wanted.  He was last seen at Copp's near the intersection of Maple Grove and Hwy. PD.
