Former fugitive to be sent to Illinois

MADISON (WKOW) -- A man who was the subject of an intense manhunt in Madison and Fitchburg Thursday waived his right to an extradition hearing, and will be returned to Illinois.

33-year-old Paris Poe told a Dane County court commissioner Monday there was no coercion in his decision to voluntarily go back to Illinois.

"And do you want to give up those rights and be returned to Illinois as quickly as possible?" commissioner Todd Meuer asked Poe.

"Yes, sir," Poe responded.

For hours Thursday, an FBI swat team and law enforcement officers from several local departments scoured a three square mile area after confirming Poe had been at a Fitchburg hotel. The fugitive search also prompted schools in Madison, Fitchburg and Verona to lock down.

Authorities say Poe was captured during a high risk traffic stop on Highway-30 in Madison Thursday around 7 p.m.

FBI officials say Poe had been wanted for allegedly violating the terms of his parole in connection to an armed robbery conviction, and also as a person-of-interest in a federal murder investigation.

Poe appeared in court Monday with a shaved head. Hotel surveillance video of Poe released to the public Thursday showed him with long, dreadlocks. Authorities say they believe Poe shaved his head to avoid detection during his attempt to escape capture.

FBI officials say Poe had help remaining free before his capture. FBI Milwaukee spokesperson Leonard Peace tells 27 News there are no current plans to seek charges against anyone who was in contact with Poe while he was a fugitive in Dane County, including the woman who drove the car involved in Thursday's traffic stop. Peace says people could have had contact with Poe with no intention of trying to help him get away from law enforcement officers.
