WASHINGTON (WKOW) – The IRS has apologized and admits that some
groups were subject to further review simply because they had the names "Tea
Party" and "Patriot."

The nation's largest Tea Party organization,
the Tea Party Patriots, says they faced big delays and mountains of paperwork
after applying for tax exempt status in 2009.
IRS officials say the employees responsible
for the incident "did pick the cases by names and that's absolutely
inappropriate and not the way we should do things."
The agency insists that practice was not done
for political or partisan reasons. The
IRS says changes have been made to avoid further mistakes.
According to the Associated Press, senior
officials at the IRS knew of the targeting as early as 2011.
