IRS admits to over-scrutinizing conservative groups

WASHINGTON (WKOW) – The IRS has apologized and admits that some groups were subject to further review simply because they had the names "Tea Party" and "Patriot."

Republicans are calling the behavior from the IRS "chilling."

The nation's largest Tea Party organization, the Tea Party Patriots, says they faced big delays and mountains of paperwork after applying for tax exempt status in 2009.

IRS officials say the employees responsible for the incident "did pick the cases by names and that's absolutely inappropriate and not the way we should do things."

The agency insists that practice was not done for political or partisan reasons.  The IRS says changes have been made to avoid further mistakes.

According to the Associated Press, senior officials at the IRS knew of the targeting as early as 2011.
