LOS ANGELES (WKOW) -- Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie has revealed in a New York Times op-ed that she has undergone a preventative double mastectomy.
In the piece Jolie writes that through genetic testing, she discovered she has a gene that sharply increases her risk of developing breast cancer. Doctors estimated she had an 87% risk of contracting the disease.
Jolie decided to be proactive and undergo the double mastectomy as a preventive measure. She finished 3 months of medical procedures last month.
According to Jolie, her risk of developing it is now less than 5%. She writes her kids no longer have to worry about losing her to breast cancer.
