President Obama visits Moore, OK to survey tornado damage

MOORE, Okla. (WKOW) -- President Obama visited an Oklahoma community devastated by a tornado on Sunday, consoling people and pledging the government and the nation will stand behind them.

The president walked through the community of Moore, meeting residents and first responders who saved lives on Monday when an EF5 tornado tore through town killing 24 people, including 10 children. Thousands of homes were either destroyed or damaged.

Standing with Gov. Mary Fallin and other state and federal officials, President Obama noted a big rebuilding job ahead.

"We're gonna be there as shelter from the storm," the president says. "When we say that we got your back, I promise you that we keep our word."

The White House says the Federal Emergency Management Agency has already provided $57 million in rebates and incentives to help build about 12,000 storm shelters in Oklahoma.
