HOUSTON, TX (WKOW) -- The fire chief in Houston says four firefighters who died in a motel fire were searching for people they thought were trapped.

Officials say the crews thought there were civilians in the Southwest Inn when the roof collapsed.

Five other firefighters were hurt. One of them remains in critical condition in a burn unit.

The fire broke out around noon at a restaurant and club at the motel.

The cause has not been released.


HOUSTON, TX (WKOW) -- Authorities say four firefighters died while trying to battle a fire in a motel in Houston.

The local medical examiner's office says three died at the scene, while the fourth died at the hospital.

Five other firefighters were injured and are hospitalized for chest pains or leg injuries.

The fire broke out just after noon Friday at a restaurant and club at the Southwest Inn on U.S. 59.

Flames spread to the motel and were shooting from the roof, blanketing the area in thick smoke, before firefighters extinguished the blaze about two hours later.

The fire's cause hasn't been released.
